Strong performance for HS2: DEVO-Tech handling solutions in use at Hartlepool

The project

HS2 (High Speed Two) is Europe's biggest infrastructure project and will revolutionise travel between London, the West Midlands and the South East of the UK. With faster journeys, modern stations and more capacity, HS2 will halve journey times and improve access to hundreds of destinations. It will also provide a major boost to the UK's economic development, creating thousands of new jobs and homes. Four state-of-the-art stations, 130 bridges and 32 miles of tunnels will be built over 140 miles of track - a project that will lay the foundations for a sustainable and innovative future for travel.

DEVO-Tech AG is supplying customised segment handling systems to STRABAG UK for the realisation of this mega-project. The state of the art production facility in Hartlepool will produce over 83,000 concrete segments for the construction of the Northolt Tunnel East and the Euston Tunnel. These segments will be used by Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture (SCS JV) to build over 8.4 miles of tunnels under London.

Focus on sustainability and efficiency

The onsite manufacturing process has been marked using robotics to support the efficient and sustainable production of the high-quality reinforcement cages required for each tunnel segment. Direct access from the Hartlepool facility to the rail network means that segments can be delivered by rail to HS2’s London tunnels contractor, Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture (SCS JV) at its London Logistics Hub. Each freight train carries up to 20 segment rings, removing the need for lorry journeys on the UK’s road network, reducing congestion and carbon emissions.  

In this way, the project not only supports the construction of HS2, but also makes an important contribution to more sustainable construction.

Our services

The supply includes two multi-segment tongs for off-site storage and train loading, each capable of holding segments in configurations of one to three segments. The segments are lifted with a positive fit. In addition, a single tong specifically designed for the requirements of segment production has already been commissioned. These solutions make a significant contribution to ensuring that production runs smoothly and that bottlenecks are avoided.

  • 2x DHL-28.0T-SF multi-segment tongs for external storage and loading of trains with adjustable stops for 1, 2 or 3 segments
