Brenner Base Tunnel LOS H53: Segment logistics on the construction site
The project
On April 4, 2023, BBT SE awarded the contract to the consortium consisting of Porr Bau GmbH, Marti GmbH Austria and Marti Tunnel AG Switzerland for the tunnel work for the last and largest construction lot on Austrian project territory. According to the client, the sub-project, which is scheduled to take 70.5 months to build, comprises 25.2 km of main tunnel running between the municipality of Pfons and the national border at Brenner.
Two Herrenknecht TBMs are used for approx. 15.2 km of the main northbound tunnel: one in the west section and the other in the east section of the Brenner Base Tunnel.
Challenging segment logistics on the construction site
Segment logistics face a particular challenge during the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel Lot H53: the 54,000 concrete elements required for tunnel construction cannot be produced directly on the construction site. Instead, production takes place externally and the concrete elements, which weigh several tons, are delivered to the tunnel construction site by rail via specially laid tracks.
To ensure that the two tunnel boring machines Wilma and Olga can work smoothly, the segments and prefabricated base parts weighing over 10 tons must be unloaded quickly after arrival, stored safely and transported to the starting shaft at the right moment. This requires sophisticated logistics in order to synchronize the processes seamlessly with the tunnelling progress.
Our solutions
In order to master these logistical challenges, ARGE H53 BBT uses our tried and tested multi-segment clamps - power packs with a payload of up to 32 tons (which, incidentally, corresponds to the weight of a full-grown humpback whale). After unloading from the trains, the clamps ensure orderly and space-saving storage of the precast concrete elements and guarantee safe onward transportation to the TBM supply. Thanks to precise control systems, the devices enable fast and gentle handling of the sensitive components.
